*María Suarez Toro* is a feminist, journalist and human rights activist. Since 1991, she has linked the movements of women, human rights, and communications rights in Costa Rica, Latin America and around the world, as co-director of* FIRE: Feminist International Radio Endeavor*.
Suarez also co-founded and now co- coordinates *Alas de Mariposa* (Wings of the Butterfly), a project that seeks to strengthen the women's movement through artistic expression. Most recently, she co-authored the book *Se Vende Lindo País* (Lovely Country for Sale) which documents the grassroots democratic movement to stop a controversial plan by a US oil company to drill off the Atlantic Coast of Costa Rica.
She taught Communications at the University of Denver from 1998-2000, and at the Institute for Further Education of Journalists (FOJO) in Sweden from 1995-2000.
Ms Suarez visits USF as part of the Global Women's Rights Forum and the Davies Forum.
